WHAT IS ART THERAPY?

In Latvia art therapy (visual plastic art therapy) is one of four art therapy specializations (besides music, dance movement and drama) which uses art and the creative process of art making as a therapeutic tool to improve one’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Art therapy enables people to express their thoughts, feelings, and needs through various forms of verbal and non-verbal art.

Do I need to be an artist?

Art therapy utilizes art in a different context and with different intentions as opposed to other form of fine and visual arts. A person needs neither education in art nor any other art related skills. Generally accepted standards of "beauty and aesthetic" in art do not apply here - the key is in the creative and therapeutic process of the experience itself.

What art media is used in art therapy?

A wide variety of art media can be used in art therapy - coloured pencils, markers, charcoal, paints, clay, etc.

How long is an art therapy session?

While the duration of typical art therapy sessions vary, they tend to be 30/60/90 minutes long depending on the client’s needs and abilities.

How do AT sessions work?

AT sessions can be held individually or in groups. Each and every session is tailored to the needs and goals of a particular client or group. At the beginning of an AT session clients can either choose from a variety of methods/techniques offered by the therapist or make a spontaneous art work of their own choosing. If possible, a session ends with a conversation about the creative process and the results that emerged from it.
